Inside & Out: States of Mind
A Reflective Collection of Expressive Portraits by Women Artists
The work of Diane Maroun and Nicole Moné focuses on that time between activity and expression. There paintings strive to capture moments of solitude and contemplation; a time where the past may be reviewed and the future put in motion. The viewer is more a voyeur than participant, wondering of the possible mysteries of the moment. Is it contentment or melancholy that fuels the spirit of those we are watching?
Annie Bobroff-Hajal and Ekua Holmes offer a different view, a contrasting level of participation in these captured moments. Whether the subject is looking directly at the viewer or skipping away at play, there is engagement and expression in all we see. Their lives and situations are open to us, we are in the moment with them and that moment is now.
The animal portraits of Catherine Smith offer us a rare mixture of these levels of engagement and expression. It is rare to see animals so isolated from their surroundings and other animals. We are forced to witness a certain humanness in these creatures. Or is it the animus in our own humanity that we begin to feel? The dialogue is now turned inward on the viewers as they must begin to reflect on just what it is they see and feel in these works.
