Born in Elgin, Illinois and the youngest of four brothers who all served in the military, Phil enlisted in the Army while a junior in high school. Soon after high school graduation he was called up for duty. He received basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and then on to specialty training at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Phil’s specialty was in communications as part of the 11th Signal Brigade NETCOM. He was deployed to Vietnam in 69’, landing in Bien Hoa with 1st Signal Brigade then on moved to Phu Bai. He would see more combat action while stationed in Quang Tri, and later he was attached to the 3rd Marines in Don Ha and Red Devil LZ. Phil’s time in country lasted one year and he was ready to come home to Elgin. Upon returning home he attended Elgin Community College after which he worked for 13 years as machine operator at Chicago Rawhide. Phil married in 1990 to Army veteran Wendy, they have a daughter. Both Phil and Wendy are active are active members of their local VFW.
