Born in Germany, Als family emigrated to the U.S. when he was a young child. Al dreamed of one day becoming a U.S. Marine. Before graduating high school on August 17, 1967 at age 17, Al joined the Marines on the buddy plan with his childhood friends John and Mike. He had a year to complete high school before enlistment. All three young men where combat Marines with Reconnaissance on the front lines of the battles. John did not survive battle after the siege of Khe Sahn. Mike went to Vietnam while Al spent a year with 5th Force Recon in San Diego. He later joined Mike at 1st Reconnaissance Battalion. While in Da Nang at Camp Reasoner Al served with Charlie Co. and Mike served with Alpha Co. Al considers the U.S. Marine Corps to be "best organization in the world". After his two tours of duty Vietnam he came home in 1970, married Linda, started a family and worked as a truck driver for the next 40 years.
