• Esther Popel Shaw (1896-1958) was an accomplished teacher, author, activist, and poet, originally from Pennsylvania. This intimate view of Mrs. Shaw nestling her daughter protectively in her arm evokes the care with which the Scurlocks composed their photographs to emphasize cultured respectability, family stability, pride, and love. Esther Popel Shaw’s daughter, Patricia, grew up to marry and move to Europe, settling in Norway.
