Camp Clarissa Scott picnic at Highland Beach, Maryland c. 1931
- Although described as a shot of the girls from the nearby YWCA Camp Clarissa Scott (named after the writer and poet, Clarissa Scott Delaney), the seated figure to the right, holding a baseball and wearing high-top sneakers, looks suspiciously like a camper’s little brother. Highland Beach, located south of Annapolis, Maryland, has been a haven for African American families since the late nineteenth century. It was founded in 1893 by Charles R. Douglass, the forth child of Frederick Douglass and his first wife, Anna.
