Dunbar High Championship Basketball Team with Charles Drew c. 1922
- Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, founded in 1870, was the first public high school for African Americans in the United States. A lack of opportunities for black professionals due to racial segregation resulted in an extremely high concentration of black professionals who administered, taught and advocated for the highest quality education for its students. This Scurlock image profiles the 1922 basketball team, demonstrating the school’s commitment to athletics as well as academics.
