Sungsook Hong Setton
After studying under Korean and Chinese masters, I have practiced water-ink painting (sumi-e) for almost three decades. I have exhibited my work widely both in the US and UK. Currently I am teaching at Westchester Community College and the China Institute of Manhattan. I obtained a BA at Stony Brook University and am expected to gain an MFA at Goddard College in summer 2008.
I created this series while I was listening to various pieces of music, when I collaborated with the musical group Ardesco on a multi-media project titled "Brush Voice." I enjoyed the aspect of live performance as well as the end result. I felt as if my brush was a musical instrument.
Since my work is rooted in a dialogue between artistic traditions from East and West, I feel quite at home with the topic "Silk Road."
