Sally Feng

National Award-Winning Artist Sally Feng was born and raised in China where she developed an interest in the arts at an early age. It could be said that art is in her blood, since her father was a calligrapher and as she grew she was surrounded by art.

Ms. Feng met several local artists who specialized in Western style art and began to spend time in their studio. Through these artists she gained experience working with oils. Later she was accepted to the prestigious Tianjin Institute of Fine Arts. She loved the drawing aspect of design and how it let her express her creativity. While at the Tianjin Institute she was fortunate to meet and befriend the well-known sumi-e artists Bai Gengyan and He Jiaying, who were both on the faculty. They became friends and mentors to Ms. Feng, and influenced her work.

After graduating from the Tianjin Institute, Ms. Feng worked in fashion design. She designed costumes for performing companies and for Tianjin Television. She then became Chief Designer for Dream Moon fashions. A television special about successful Chinese women designers featured an episode about Ms. Feng. In 1999 Ms. Feng came to the United States to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, from which she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2002. Ms. Feng became a mother in 2003 and she credits the time at home with her daughter for giving her the freedom to reinvigorate her love of art. Her family has been a great source of inspiration and support for her.
