Picture That

Dwight Baird

After finishing art school, Baird spent two years as a graphic artist and has been traveling and painting full-time ever since.  He spent two years in Europe before returning to Canada, working with galleries and promoting his art. In 1993 he published selected images from "The Baseball Collection" - a series of fifty baseball paintings. His work was featured in the 1992 MLB All-Star Program, and his signature piece, "At the Twilight's Last Gleaming", was used as the cover concept for the program in 1994.

Working in acrylics, Baird has developed a style of contemporary realism, using a combination of specific areas of detail juxtaposed against larger backgrounds that often feature "big brush" subtle squares of different tones.  Set against a dramatic backdrop of light and shadow of the mean streets of Havana, his new, larger pieces represent the beautiful decay of daily life in a city on the verge of imminent change.

The unique subject matter and execution is bold and exciting. The combination of subject, style, light and composition sets his work apart. It offers us a peek through the keyhole of a country stopped in time but desperate for change. Baird's paintings are historical documents - from sun-splashed balconies, down winding streets and through mysterious doorways, he captures the light and soul of a vibrant city and country locked in the past, living in the present and hoping for the future...DWIGHT BAIRD
