Duk Soon Fwhang

Duk Soon Fwhang, the painter, was born in Korea in the 1930’s into a family long involved in Korean arts and culture. At an early age, she studied classical brush painting under the master, Lee Chun Jung, pursued independent studies in fine art upon arrival to the United States, in the late 1950’s and later attended Art Student’s League in New York city during the 1970’s. For many years, she painted commissioned portraits and worked as a freelance illustrator.

The stunning tones and textures of her enchanting rustic images conjured masterfully in oils, pastels and ink, often strike an eerie balance between sweet tranquility and haunting gloom. her works often reflect her love for nature an awe of the unknown. Highly recognized for her spiritual portraits, Duk Soon's work has been published widely by Passionist Publications and the United Council of Churches. Her artistry has graced the beautiful book cover of the Passion of Jesus, the popular Christian website Bread on the Waters, as well as Following Jesus Christ. She has also illustrated many children’s pamphlets including: Children’s Prayers, The Story of St. Nicholas, Jesus Loves Me, as well as leaflets for mature readers such as Prayers for You.

Having had solo and group exhibitions, Duk Soon has been prominently featured in periodicals such as Le Revue Modern, Matawan Journal, The Advisor, The Independent.
