Bernard

Began his career as an artist long before he was able to write his name. He received a vast amount of success as both a Fine and Commercial Artist in his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina. With a degree from Benedict College, Bernard pursued a Masters degree in Fine Art.

Bernard later traveled to Detroit, Michigan and finally to New York City. After years of truly being a starving artist, Bernard abandoned his first love, the arts, and went into the film industry as a Scenic Artist. Bernard has worked on more then thirty major motion pictures and still continues to do film work in his spare time. Upon the completion of two very successful films, Strictly Business and Malcolm X, Bernard went back into the studio.

Bernard saw the need to display his works and the works of other local artists who needed an outlet for their creativity. Bernard is a multi-talented and multi- faceted artist whose warm southern demeanor and graciousness has reached into every nook and cranny of South Orange’s culturally diverse setting.

The inspiration for many of Bernard’s works come from his friends his mother, his children and his wife, his commitment to children, his deep southern roots and the many images of the African American community. He is the creator of several limited edition series including The Heritage Sculpture Edition, Jazz Legends, flower Girl and the Indigo Series and the newly released Historical Heroes. Bernard captures the beauty, joy, emotion and especially the vibrant colors of life in all his works. For he has always taken truth and brought it to life through art. He creates from within, taking the African American experience in all its magnificent life forms and said with a brush stroke “This Is!
