Barbara Mathis

Barbara Mathis is a graduate of The High School of Art & Design and Hunter College, New York. She also studied at the Art Students League, The School of Visual Arts, and Silvermine Arts Guild. Mathis began her art career in the animation industry working on the "Spiderman" cartoon series. She later became the first women graphic artist at ABC News.

Mathis states that meeting and watching people is her passion and painting them is her true love. Most of the people Mathis uses in her work are family, friends or someone who has shared an experience with her. "My paintings tell stories through portraiture and history," Mathis says. "Whether it is a hand, a foot, or someone's face, I incorporate a sense of the person through color and form." It is Mathis' desire to draw her viewers into her work and capture the human appeal. Many of her works are in private collections and have been featured through juried and invitational exhibitions including Katonah Museum, Pfizer Corporation, Merrill Lynch, and Greenwich Arts Society.
